Austrian Geomagnetic Data
Status and Plans

  1. Austrian geomagnetic data
1995-1998: Geomagnetic survey of Austria, 1997.0
282 stations in Austria, mean spacing 20 km
21 stations in 7 neighbouring countries, border region
Comparison measurements at 7 observatories in 5 neighbouring countries
(Publication: The geomagnetic survey of Austria 1995-1998, J.Berger, N.Blaumoser, G.Duma, B.Leichter, Contributions to Geophysics and Geodesy, Geophys. Inst. Slovak Acad. Sciences, Vol.31/1,2001,279-284)

1999-2002: 13 Repeat stations measured each year, stations cover state territory uniformly, reduced to 1999.5, 2000.5, 2001.5, 2002.5 (WIK observatory).

  • The Repeat Station Network in Austria
  • It consists of 13 stations, which have proved most magnetically undisturbed during the geomagnetic survey of Austria 1995-1998. The average station distance is about 100 km. 8 of them are situated along the Austrian border, 5 inside the country. The sites are marked by limestone pillars. The exact station co-ordinates have been determined by the Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying, Vienna.

  • Measurements in Slovenia
  • In October 1998, geomagnetic measurements have been conducted in Slovenia by members of the Austrian Geomagnetic Service, Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics, Vienna. The measurements were part of the Austrian Geomagnetic Survey 1995-1998. The campaign has been carried out in a very enjoyable co-operation with the Institute of Geology, Geotechnics and Geophysics (Robert Stopar) and the Geodetska uprava Republike Slovenije, Ljubljana, (Mag. Dusan Miskovic) who helped to select the measuring sites and who provided the required geodetical data and maps. 4 geomagnetic stations have been measured in Slovenia, located in a distance of 30 km to 50 km south of the Austrian-Slovenian border: Beltinci, Rogoza, Aerodrome Kranj-Ljubljana and Kobarid.

  • Plans for annual repeat measurements
  • In order to get information about the secular variation in Austria and to update the geomagnetic maps of Austria, it is planned to measure the field at the 13 repeat stations in Austria every year.

  • Exchange of repeat station data
  • For scientific non-commercial purposes, e.g. for a compilation of an European magnetic map or to maintain an European data base, the Austrian Geomagnetic Service can provide the annual repeat station data, but kindly asks for a co-authorship in publications. On the same basis, the Austrian Geomagnetic Service will be glad to receive geomagnetic data from neighbouring countries to perform studies on the European geomagnetic field and its secular variation.

  • Additional comparison measurements at foreign observatories and at IAGA Workshops
  • As practiced in the past, we plan to perform comparison measurements at neighbouring observatories aimed at instrument control in the next years. Therefore we will be grateful for the co-operation of the observatory staffs in this regard and thank in advance. Equally, we offer staffs to carry out such measurements at our observatory Wien-Cobenzl.
